Meal Train for Surgery Recovery

After surgery, everyday jobs like standing at the stove, carrying groceries in from the car or scrubbing a pile of pots can be off-limits for a while. A meal train lets friends, neighbors and coworkers cover dinners during recovery, so the patient can rest and whoever is looking after them has one less thing to manage.

This template schedules two weeks of weeknight dinners, with a recipient card for dietary notes and delivery instructions. Set the start date โ€” usually the day they come home โ€” fill in what the family tells you, and share the link. Helpers choose a night, note what they're bringing, and never need an account or email.

Meals During Recovery

Thank you for helping while our friend recovers from surgery.
Please read the dietary notes below before you plan your meal, and follow them exactly, even if a dish seems harmless.
Label your dish with the date and reheating directions and leave it in the cooler on the porch. Rest comes first right now, so there's no need to knock.

Get the details from the family first

Helpers can only cook the right meal if the information on the page is accurate. Before you share the link, check with the patient or their main caregiver:

  • Dietary instructions: some people come home with specific guidance from their surgeon or care team. Copy exactly what the family tells you into the dietary notes. Don't add your own suggestions or guess at what might be good for them; if something is unclear, ask.
  • Who's eating: the patient may be eating less than usual while a spouse or kids eat normally. Ask how many people each meal should feed.
  • Getting the food inside: will someone be home to bring the cooler in, or will the patient be on their own? If bending or lifting is hard for them right now, ask whether helpers should carry the meal in instead.
  • How private to keep it: not everyone wants their whole social circle to know about their surgery. Ask who they're comfortable with you inviting.

Weekends are switched off in this template because family members are often around then. If the patient lives alone or their caregiver works weekends, include weekends when you set the start date. If the surgery date moves, add or remove nights and post an update on the event page so helpers know.

Make meals easy to eat days later

  • Pack in portions: split a casserole into two or three smaller containers so it can be reheated one serving at a time, instead of one big pan that has to be finished in a day.
  • Label every container: write the dish, the date you made it and how to reheat it โ€” for example, "350ยฐF for 25 minutes, covered" or "microwave 2 minutes, stir halfway" โ€” on masking tape or a sticky label.
  • List the ingredients: a short ingredient list on the lid lets the family check a dish against any instructions they've been given without having to call you.
  • Choose easy-open packaging: snap-on lids and zip-top bags are simpler than tightly wrapped foil for someone who is sore, stiff or short on grip strength.
  • Use the porch, then text: leave the meal in the cooler and send a short message. A knock can wake someone who has finally fallen asleep.
  • Think beyond dinner: if the patient is home alone during the day, a couple of ready-to-eat lunches tucked into the same drop-off can help.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a meal train after surgery run?

It depends on the surgery and the person. Two weeks is a reasonable place to start; ask the family how long they expect to need help, and add more nights if recovery takes longer. The link stays the same, so helpers can come back and claim the new dates.

What should go in the dietary notes?

Only what the patient or their caregiver asks you to include โ€” allergies, foods their care team has told them to avoid, or simple dislikes. Don't add medical details they haven't asked you to share, and don't fill gaps with your own assumptions.

Can people sign up for lunch as well as dinner?

Yes. Each date on a meal train can have breakfast, lunch and dinner slots. This template starts with dinner only; add lunch when you set it up if the patient will be home alone during the day.

How will helpers remember their night?

After signing up, helpers can tap "Add to calendar" to save their date to Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar and set a reminder there. There are no reminder emails or texts.

Can the patient see who is bringing meals?

Yes, if you send them the link. Each night lists the helper's name and what they're bringing, which makes thank-you notes easier later. With "hide names" on, the names are visible only to you, the organizer.
